The Year 3/4 classes visited the Royal Botanic Gardens last week (thankfully it was the one gloriously sunny day in the middle of an otherwise wet, cold week). When I asked my Year 3 daughter what she thought they’d be doing on the excursion she went into great detail describing the scientific drawings they’d been practicing. And I had to say that I was a bit jealous because when I was at (high) school, one of my favourite things in biology were the species transects and quadrants we’d do on field-trips – in year 3/4 terms, it’s a ‘bug census’. However, whether you’re in Year 3/4 or 11/12, the principle is the same – a defined space, paper and pencil, magnifying glass and observant eyes!
I always enjoyed the exercise because I liked the sorting, taxonomy and list making. My daughter said that she was “…leaving the counting to someone else…” and instead was going to “…spend the day drawing bugs….”. Either way, it sounded like the best day.

We could not have asked for a better day for last week’s House Cross Country meet. While Mr Penson and Kerry limbered up ahead of their participation in every race, Clare made sure the competitors were physically and psychologically ready to run. I took careful note of her words of wisdom at the start of the U11 Boys race – “I want you to push out of your comfort zone. I’m not asking you to vomit but work hard.” (Excellent advice – I’ll remember this next time I go out for yum cha).

I don’t read much pop psychology, however, years ago I picked up a copy of Gretchen Rubin’s The Happiness Project and I would go so far as to say that it was life-changing. So much of what Rubin said resonated and many of the things she suggested I put into practice (and still do, years later).
One of the chapters in the book focuses on being ‘serious about play’ and how to find things that, as an adult, are fun. As we grow older, we often fill our leisure time with things that are expected of us as opposed to what we find truly ‘fun’. Continue reading
Art teacher Kerry Lomas shares the excitement of working with clay –
The success of SPLASH in 2014 has resulted in much excitement, anticipation and messy hands in the Art room this year thanks to the purchase of a new kiln. The countless hours volunteers spent organizing the SPLASH event has clearly paid off as the students are enjoying using clay for the first time in many years. For some students, it has been their first experience molding and constructing out of clay. It has been such a valuable learning experience and they eagerly await their next clay unit!
