As part of our $10,000 Energy Efficiency Grant for Victorian Schools, Mark Smith from PlanetSavers Australia came to Kew Primary School to complete an audit. This audit is the first step in identifying energy waste and it also provided a list of costed recommendations that could see our school reduce energy waste by over 25%.
Sounds like a good idea? Well even better was the way PlanetSavers engaged with student leaders to first assist with the audit itself and then develop strategies and processes for the school to act. Continue reading
I fondly recall my first billy cart ride – the wind in my hair (because no such thing as helmets in the seventies, and the fact that I was traveling at what I would now consider an alarming rate down a hill) and the feeling of wild exhilaration as the cart bumped over the uneven footpath. My parents still live in the street where my first billy cart ride took place and it was when the Grade 6 Billy Cart project began that I considered the hill and its suitability for billy carts. And immediately thought “What was my dad thinking, sending me down that?!” (there is no way I’d let my kids ride down this particular steep hill which includes a tricky s-bend at the bottom). So I asked my parents this very question – my mum’s response was that my dad wasn’t thinking (!) and my dad’s response was “I grew up in Surrey Hills – I know about hills and billy carts.” (!)
Apart from the fun of riding a billy cart (and Kew has some premium hills), the joy is in the making. And as Jaci Davis reports, the Grade 6 students had a brilliant time working on their billy cart projects –
Sewing is not in my skill set. At all. In fact, I’m fairly sure that I keep the tailor near Leo’s Supermarket in business. So it’s somewhat surprising that my daughter, Penny (Grade 2), loves sewing – where does this come from (because there’s obviously no example set at home)? On the look-out for “…things to sew…”, and knowing that she’s probably not quite up to hemming my jeans, Kewriosity 2015 came at just the right time.
This week, teachers Lee-Ann Butchart and Mary Whitehouse share some of the Kewriosity projects, including the wildly successful sewing workshop.
Over the past four weeks the year 1 and 2 students have been enjoying spending time in their various Kewriosity groups. These groups have included French Songs & Games, Sewing, Drama, Paper Skills and Paper Planes, and Antarctica. Continue reading
The last two assemblies have been a case of ‘reveal all’. Mr Penson started with telling us that when he was a boy, he loved nothing better* than identifying flags. It’s not hard to see the appeal of flags – crisp design, symbolic and instantly recognisable.
With this in mind, students began the school year with the ‘Kick Start Kew’ program and were given the task of creating a flag that represented what was important to their class. Both the Kick Start Kew program and the flag project were a positive and creative means of making sure that everyone was beginning 2015 with a consistent approach to expectations and values.
The class flags were unveiled at assembly, with representatives from each class sharing the meaning behind their design. Some classes went for the minimalist look – our wonderful old Peppercorn tree, linked hands and open books. Continue reading
Here is a condensed version of my review and evaluation for our school this year. The full version includes a more detailed outline of our goals that were a part of our Annual Implementation Plan (AIP) and a statement of performance for each of these areas. This is available on our school website and hard copies can also be collected from our school office.
As I reflect on the year, I am very proud of what our whole school community has achieved. This year it has been frequently commented on by students, parents and staff that we have a renewed sense of optimism and positivity around the future direction of our school. I am also very excited about the future for Kew Primary. Over the course of this year we have been able to make some key decisions and implement some new processes that will enable and drive our future direction.
2014 has also been a very big year for our staff. We have embraced a very extensive professional learning program and implemented many changes to the way our staff functions. I thank all staff for their commitment and support and acknowledge their hard work and professionalism this year. Continue reading
Last night, Finn (grade five), mentioned over dinner that his “…favourite news service is Behind the News…”. My first thought was “Wow! They’re still making Behind the News!” (my second thought was “What other news services does he watch?).
Mention of BTN prompted a little walk down memory lane, specifically, the television shows that we watched at school in the eighties (I’ll save you doing the sums, I was at primary school from 1978 to 1984).
I also liked BTN but the show that I really, really loved? Infinity Ltd. Do you remember the edgy Infinity Ltd. logo? The on-trend opening credits and the catchy song? And the problems they solved, despite the dastardly Vortex and Plankton constantly undermining the Infinity Ltd. team?
