Maths and geography combine! Thank you to the Year 1 students for this week’s post about their mapping project.
Have you ever found yourself lost at Sorrento or Falls Creek?
Have you ever wondered what would be the best way to get around Hays Paddock, Eglinton Park or even Venus Bay?
Well…the Year 1 students would certainly be able to help you and steer you in the right direction.
The Year 1s designed maps of places that were special to them. They created very comprehensive and detailed directions to enable anyone to move around their maps, following the right path. Their maps included a range of positional terms, turns, steps and cardinal directions.
Here is what some of the Year 1 students had to say about their mapping experience in Maths.
I designed a map for Falls Creek. I enjoyed making the five items for Falls Creek and adding them to my map. I also enjoyed drawing the pictures and doing the directions. I learnt a bit more about north, south, east and west. I learnt how to design maps. I learnt that I could also use words like go around or go over. I learnt how to work out how many steps and I learnt how to put them in directions. I learnt that you don’t just have the goal to get to, you also have things that help you get there. There’s always a good point for getting there. Alex
I designed a map for Venus Bay. I enjoyed drawing the five little items that needed to be passed on the map. I enjoyed making my first map. I learnt how to follow a map and make directions using north, east, south and west and the number of steps. It was fun. Aedan
I designed a map for Eglinton Park playground. I enjoyed drawing and designing my map. I learnt how to use north, south, east and west and find out how many squares to walk. Naomi
I designed a Rosie’s walk map. I enjoyed doing the path. I learnt how to use west, south, east and north. Olinda
I designed a Rosie’s walk map. I enjoyed working out the directions and how many steps to take. I learnt not to start and the finish at the same place. Gowtham
I designed a Rosie’s Walk map. I enjoyed doing a path any way I liked. I learnt which way was north, east, south and west. Victoria
I designed a map of Hays Paddock. I enjoyed doing the drawings of the things at the park, like the ice-cream truck. I enjoyed doing the directions. I learnt how to design a map. I learnt how to use north, south, east and west and work out the right number of steps to take. Daniel
I designed a map of the beach. I enjoyed making the map. I enjoyed drawing the beach pictures and putting in a path. I learnt how to use north, south, east and west for the map and to work out how many steps to do. Anna
